"Relief after 10 years..."

"I originally saw Dr. Matro for chronic low back pain with spasms. I had lived with this daily pain for about ten years. After three sessions, I was out of pain. A little over a year ago, I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel, and surgery was recommended. Regular adjustments keep me nearly symptom-free. An initial exam that included spinal x-rays revealed deterioration in my neck. I would not have known about this condition without the x-rays and exam, and with Dr. Matro’s adjustments and exercise, have improved alignment. At present, I have regular chiropractic adjustments every five weeks. My “tune ups” keep my symptoms to a minimum, allowing me to have a good quality of life."

"A spot in his lower back that was causing the limp"

“Dr. Joyce Matro has been treating my Yellow Lab, Nugget for the last two years. Originally he suffered from severe neck pain and spasms, which with Joyce’s wonderful care has disappeared. Only one attack in the last year. Recently Nugget started limping, I was afraid he might be getting hip dysplasia, due to his large 130lb frame. I took him to Joyce who discovered a spot in his lower back that was causing the limp. After a couple adjustments he is able to jump and run normally. For anyone that has a dog with any medical problems that can be helped with chiropractic care I hope that you will contact Dr. Joyce Matro, She has certainly helped Nugget and in doing that she has given me peace of mind, knowing that my dog does not have to live in pain and suffer.”

"I believe in monthly maintenance"

"Matro/Kemper Chiropractic has been by far one of the best healthcare providers I have ever had. Through skeletal adjustments and attention to muscular issues, I have attained a healthy balance in my body and feel as good as, or better than, I did in my thirties (forty years ago). I believe in monthly maintenance visits. And in most cases of physical trauma, I come in to this clinic first. This has always brought me back to par with a strong combination of adjustments and recommendations of various exercises and stretches and helpful suggestions for vitamin and mineral intake. Treatments are gentle and considerate. They both bring me back to healthy body alignment and result in improved posture. I firmly believe that chiropractic care has greatly reduced the number of visits to other medical care providers. I will certainly continue to take advantage of the skill and art of chiropractic care for the rest of my life."

"I aspire to join the ranks of doctors who make life worth living."

Lying in the middle of the road I thought about how tired I was and maybe I should take a nap.  Somewhere in the back of my mind I realized that I was in the middle of the road, which is not the best place to rest.

“Are you alright?” someone asked me.

It was not until someone asked me where it hurt that I realized that my legs were burning with pain and the blood on my arm was coming from my head.

This was one of the most defining moments of my adult life, the moment I realized how lucky I was to be alive.  In April 2007, a car traveling at 35 mph hit me while I was walking in a crosswalk. Little did I know at the time, I was about to embark on one of the greatest challenges I have ever faced - recovery.  It was during the journey of my recovery that my desire to become a physician was kindled.

In the beginning of my recovery, I experienced continuous headaches three or four days at a time with one or two days of relief between rounds.  Most days I just wanted to lay in a dark room with an ice pack on my head but there was always work to be done.  Months after the accident, I was at my doctor’s office discussing the headaches I was experiencing.  My doctor informed me that I might “have to live with the pain.”

The fear of living continuing to live with headaches fueled my determination to find a treatment that worked for me.  Two years later, after seeing a physiatrist, dentist, chiropractor, and two acupuncturists, I finally arrived at the office of Gene Kemper, DC, DABCO. Dr. Kemper changed my quality of life and sparked my interest in medicine by taking the time to show me the difference between the X-ray of my neck compared to X-ray of a neck with a healthy curvature.  He helped me understand my injury and worked with me to alleviate the pain through the slow process of traction therapy. As the headaches receded he also remedied my foot and knee pain allowing me to begin running, which is now a passion of mine.

Meanwhile, my career as a music teacher at Butte Community College and the Children’s Choir of Chico progressed but I started to long for a new challenge as I grew stronger. The opportunity to join the 59th Army band presented itself and I knew this was the physical and mental challenge I craved. It was during basic combat training that I realized I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others overcome their physical limitations as a physician in the military. As a physician, I can delve deep into the physical and biological causes of my patients’ health conditions.

Positive peer evaluations at basic combat training led to my promotion to platoon guide.  During one long foot march, I heard shouting for me from the back of the formation. I ran toward the commotion to discover that a private had collapsed. Upon gaining control of her weapon, it appeared she was suffering from heat exhaustion so I organized help to remove her equipment then remained with her until she was safely loaded onto the emergency truck.

As her platoon guide I was obliged to help her prevent a recurrence.  I was deeply touched when she expressed thanks after the next long march, saying “I was able to complete the march because of you.”  Her heartfelt appreciation solidified my desire to pursue a leadership role in the military as a physician, not as a musician.

Although I still enjoyed aspects of teaching music upon returning home, I realized that I was no longer interested in pursuing a doctorate in music. Any research I conducted in music would only benefit a small pool of people and I wanted to have a more significant impact in my community. The idea of continuing down this path seemed less fulfilling in the bigger picture of my military experience.

Participating in the UC Davis Pre-Medical Summer Surgical Internship gave me the opportunity to understand how a hospital works and what the lives of the residents and medical students are like.  My military experience has prepared me to work long hours with early mornings so I am accustomed to the work schedule that the residents experienced.

One morning in the plastic surgery clinic, I was with a resident examining a patient when the patient’s wife became verbally aggressive toward the resident. I was impressed by the resident’s professionalism during the encounter and how his empathetic and knowledgeable responses were able to calm the agitated wife and her husband.  The attending physician reminded us that being injured or ill is stressful, and not to take the encounter personally.  The compassion shown to the woman was inspirational and I aspire to demonstrate that kind of consideration in my life and work.

Having lived with unobservable pain gives me insight into the struggles of people living with illness and disability. The experience of recovering from my accident motivates me to help others improve their health and thus improve their quality of life. I learned from my accident that life doesn’t wait for you to recover and that healing is done with a team of knowledgeable professionals who are both physically and emotionally supportive. I aspire to join the ranks of doctors who make life worth living.

I have been seeing Dr Kemper for several years and would highly recommend Dr Kemper to anyone for chiropractic needs. He has brought relief from pain and taught me how to maintain a strong and healthy spine. He also successfully treated my wife for a bulging disc. Appointments are prompt and his staff is very friendly and helpful. Thank you Dr Kemper!
